Optimal Latency to Key Regional Markets

Sicily's proximity to major submarine cable landing stations enables exceptional connectivity performance for AI and cloud workloads to key cities across multiple regions:

Sicily Connectivity Table

Figure 2: Latency measurements from Sicily (Palermo/Misilmeri) to major cities across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, demonstrating the region's exceptional connectivity for various AI and cloud use cases.

These low-latency connections make Sicily ideal for:

  • Real-time AI inference requiring minimal response times
  • Edge computing applications serving Southern Europe and North Africa
  • Private AI workloads with strict EU data residency requirements
  • High-performance computing clusters requiring low-latency node communication
Sicily's Market Advantages

Figure 3: Sicily combines key advantages: proximity to Marseille's subsea connectivity, abundant renewable energy potential, and affordable land costs, positioning it as a rising data center market.

Sustainable by Design

Sicily offers exceptional natural advantages for sustainable data center operations:

  • Superior Solar Resources: Highest solar irradiance in Italy (5.4 kWh/m²/day average)
  • Renewable Integration: Grid-independent design with solar-first architecture
  • Resilient Power: Dual grid + battery storage ensures uptime and stability
  • Cost Advantages: Inexpensive land combined with renewable energy provides operational cost benefits
  • Scalability: Abundant land availability for future expansion

Behind-the-Grid Architecture

Our "behind-the-grid" concept flips the conventional paradigm:

  • Primary power from solar and BESS
  • Grid used as backup, not base load
  • Optimized for resilience, energy arbitrage, and emission reduction

Energy Ecosystem

Green Power Meets Edge AI

SicurAI's energy architecture represents a fundamental shift in data center power systems. By prioritizing renewable energy and advanced battery storage, we've developed a resilient, sustainable infrastructure that reduces environmental impact while enhancing reliability.

  • Direct solar integration enables clean, cost-stable power
  • BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems) smooths power flow and offers backup during outages
  • Dual-feed grid connection provides Tier III-class reliability
  • Reduced reliance on diesel gensets = lower emissions, lower OPEX

Data Acquisition System (DAQ) - Schematic Description

The DAQ system outlined in the diagram enables the acquisition, storage, and visualization of environmental data in real-time, with secure remote access capabilities. In summary, it is a modern, secure, and flexible system, ideal for real-time monitoring, efficient storage, and intuitive visualization of environmental and operational variables.

1. Main Components
  • Remote User: Users accessing remotely to view data or configure the system.
  • VPN Access: Secure connection to protect data during remote access.
  • InfluxDB: Specialized database for time-series data (e.g., sensor measurements), fast and efficient.
  • Grafana: Visualization tool that creates dynamic and interactive dashboards.
2. Protocols Used
  • User Access: HTTPS (web), SSH (configuration), VPN (OpenVPN/IPsec).
  • InfluxDB Communication: REST API or InfluxDB Line Protocol.
  • Grafana Integration: HTTP/HTTPS to connect to the database and retrieve data.
3. System Operation

Environmental data (temperature, humidity, pressure, etc.) is collected via Enviro Weather devices based on Raspberry Pi Pico and sent to the central node, a Raspberry Pi 5, using HTTP protocols. The Pi 5 stores the data in InfluxDB, which manages it as time series. Grafana periodically queries the database to present measurements on customizable dashboards. Remote users can securely access the data in real-time via VPN.

  • Data Collection: Sensors or devices send data to InfluxDB (via MQTT, HTTP, TCP/IP).
  • Storage: InfluxDB stores data optimized for time series.
  • Visualization: Grafana extracts data and displays it in customizable dashboards.
  • Remote Monitoring: Users access via VPN to view real-time data.
4. Monitorable Variables
  • Environmental: Temperature, humidity, pressure.
  • Industrial: Vibrations, energy consumption, machinery status.
  • IT: CPU usage, memory, network traffic.
  • Custom: Any digital signal (analog, log, events).
5. Advantages and Versatility
  • Adaptable: Usable in IoT, industrial, and research environments.
  • Scalable: Add sensors without structural modifications.
  • Extensible: Plugins for alarms (Slack/Email), advanced analytics (Python).
  • Open Source: Grafana and InfluxDB are flexible with extensive support.
Diesel Generator Reduction with BESS

Figure 2: Implementing 100 MW of BESS capacity reduces diesel generator requirements by 38% while maintaining the same reliability for a 50MW data center.

BESS Advantages

Our battery energy storage systems (BESS) are central to our sustainability and reliability strategy, offering numerous operational and environmental benefits:

  • Store excess solar for later use, maximizing renewable utilization
  • Reduce CAPEX by minimizing diesel backup requirements
  • Enable grid services like frequency control or load curtailment
  • Potential to trade unused power allocation (bundle/PUE model)
  • Lower carbon footprint compared to traditional backup systems

Multi-Stakeholder Value Creation

BESS deployment creates value across the energy ecosystem, benefiting various stakeholders while enhancing data center operations:

  • Data Center Owners: Backup power, increased solar self-consumption, reduced demand charges
  • Grid Operators: Frequency regulation, voltage support, black start capabilities
  • Utilities: Resource adequacy, transmission congestion relief, infrastructure deferral
  • Society: Lower emissions, reduced fossil fuel dependence, greater grid stability
BESS Benefits Across Stakeholders
